American Mural Project

The American Mural Project (AMP) is the world’s largest indoor collaborative mural –120 feet long and five stories high. It is tribute to American workers and highlights what has defined the country over the last century. It serves as the center for AMP’s education programs, and seeks to inspire, to educate, to invite collaboration, and to reveal to people of all ages the many contributions they can make to American culture. Visit AMP in Winsted, CT, Friday and Saturday, 10am–5pm, and Sunday, 11am–4pm (winter hours). 
American Museum of Tort Law

The American Museum of Tort Law is a fun and interactive institution making the legal system approachable to visitors of all ages. Visit us in-person or online to learn more about the past, present, and future of tort law and civil rights. The Tort Museum is the perfect destination for history-lovers and all those looking to expand their knowledge of public advocacy.Open April 1-December 31: Tue to Sat 10-5pm and Sun 11-4pm.

In 2023, Northwestern was again ranked as one of the best community college in the country for the seventh year in a row.
All 12 community colleges have been merged into CT State Community College, effective July 1, 2023. CT State Northwestern is the same great campus and people but making it much easier for students to get the classes that they need.
Gilson Café & Cinema

Established in 1985, The Gilson Café & Cinema is one of the country's first dine-in movie theaters. You can enjoy a filling meal and then catch a movie here. The Main Auditorium and Upper Lounge are open for movie screenings on Wednesday to Saturday - doors open at 6pm. Additionally, there are live jazz performances in the Lounge on Sundays.​

One of Winchester’s secret gems, the crystal-clear water is valued for its fishing, boating, swimming and water sports opportunities. The lake is long but not wide, extending approximately three miles from north to south but only half a mile at its widest. The state boat launch is at 297 West Lake Street and boats greater than 22 feet in length and pontoon boats greater than 30 feet in length are prohibited. Two public beaches are located in First Bay, each with small parking areas-parking permits are required. ​

Winchester Center’s District No. 8 Schoolhouse was built in 1815 and continuously used until 1908. It was one of several one-room district schools in Winchester. It is the only surviving schoolhouse in Winchester that preserves its original character, as the building has not been converted to a new use or moved from its original site. ​
New Deal Mural
Winsted U.S. Post Office at 128 Main St

The historic Winsted post office houses an example of New Deal artwork: the Treasury Section of Fine Arts-commissioned mural “Lincoln's Arbiter Settles the Winsted Post Office Controversy.” The oil-on-canvas work was painted in 1938 by Amy Jones. In the painting (high up on the west wall of the lobby of the Winsted Post Office), a farmer, a shopkeeper, and a businessman surround a post office representative trying to show him where the building should go. Symbols of Winsted ring the painting, showing the Still River, a clump of laurel, and the Solomon Rockwell house, which now houses the Historical Society. more
​Soldiers' Monument and Memorial Park

During the year, The Memorial Park grounds are open to the public during daylight hours - enjoy the Victorian Garden, picnic tables, drinking fountain and beautiful views. The Soldiers' Monument is open on Memorial Day, Juneteenth event, July 4th, September 11, Veterans' Day and by appointment.
Sue Grossman Still River Greenway

​The Sue Grossman Still River Greenway is a 3.4-mile trail that stretches from Winchester (151 Torrington Rd. with parking at Lanson Dr.) to Torrington (2 Harris Dr.). This trail is a perfect destination for those who love walking, cycling, or using a wheelchair to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. It is accessible to everyone, with a flat and straight asphalt surface that is easy to navigate. Whether you want to go after work, visit as a couple, or spend quality time with your family, this greenway is an excellent choice for a daily exercise regime or a day out. The trail is currently being expanded, so soon you will be able to enjoy the downtown centers of Winsted and Torrington.​
Whiting Mills

Opened in 2004, Whiting Mills building is now home to a variety of artists, craftspeople, retail shops, small manufacturing companies, and a center for artistic, community, and social events. Look for their  Holiday Maker Shoppes and the semi-annual Open Studio events – a destination for the public to enjoy meeting resident and guest artists at the Whiting Mills.​

​​The Winchester Center Historical Association is located in the “Old Academy”.  The museum, currently  being renovated, is open during the summer during local events such as the Grange Strawberry Festival, the Grange Fair and Winchester Center Day.
Winchester Historical Society

The Winchester Historical Society is housed in the Solomon Rockwell House (c.1813), a classical Revival Colonial mansion, displaying Victorian fashions, a doll house, military collections, Civil War memorabilia and a Fire museum. Tours are conducted May through October by appointment.  ​

Located in the heart of Winsted, the Y offers a great facility and staff who care about you and our community. Our goal is to help every member of the community achieve a sustainable level of health and wellness. We achieve this through our fitness classes, programs, and facilities. Mon-Fri 5:30am–9pm, Sat 7am–4pm, Sun 7am–2pm
