Eliminate Styrofoam – Use Eco-Friendly, Waterproof Takeout Boxes in All Restaurants, Retail Food Vendors and Non-Profit Preparers

Styrofoam is among the most toxic of plastics, so eliminating it from landfills is a good thing. The Town of Winchester and the State of Connecticut have been addressing this issue for over 30 years. The Board of Selectman enacted Ordinance 157, effective on December 1, 1990, which established a task force to educate all restaurants, retail food vendors, non-profit food preparers, and food packagers to develop a comprehensive plan to recycle this product, with the ultimate goal to eliminate its use/sale in Winchester. Fast-food restaurants like Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds have been transitioning to paper products for years, but not all local businesses in Winchester have.

With the rise of take-out options to sustain businesses due to pandemic restrictions, Friends of Main Street has been looking for alternative packaging that re-enforces Ordinance 157, the town ban on polystyrene/styrofoam.

This year a Connecticut restaurateur decided to start a new business, Kraftgreen, to manufacture Eco-Friendly, waterproof takeout boxes with their new business. Previously they purchased paper to-go packaging overseas. Due to the pandemic, they had to wait four months for one order, so they decided to manufacture the packaging in Connecticut and eliminate the logistics nightmare.

What an opportunity – buy local, support a new CT business, and have a local source for food businesses in Winchester and neighboring towns...  And eliminate styrofoam from our landfill.

It's Snowing On Main Street in Winsted!

11/25/2020

Northwest Community Bank, headquartered in Winsted, CT, is partnering with Friends of Main Street-Winsted to announce 'It's Snowing On Main Street!' Starting at the corner of East End Park and Route 44, you cannot miss the large beautiful white snowflakes appearing all along Main Street – each one different and unique (65+ snowflakes down Main Street one mile long – from McGranes On The Green to Little Red Barn Brewers). This is Friends of Main Street’s largest effort to date to carry the holiday season from our historic green down our Main Street.

Northwest Community Bank has been a sponsor of Friends of Main Street-Winsted (FOMS) since its inception over two decades ago. For many years, the Bank has sponsored our Summer Concert Series, which unfortunately had to be canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When asked if they would support repurposing their concert funding to decorate Main Street for the holidays – their answer was,” Of course, yes!”

“We could not have asked a greater supporter of our town during such challenging times for businesses,” said Fran Delaney, President of Friends of Main Street-Winsted.

What is your favorite snowflake?

Last year a member of Friends of Main Street saw a four-story building in Meriden with all of its large windows painted with snowflakes and reached out to their Economic Development Commission for the artist who painted the building. The artist, Michael Genovese, a sign painter in West Hartford, CT, calls these painted snowflakes a Symphony of Snowflakes, #symphonyofsnowflakes. “We are so grateful that he is sharing his artistry on our storefronts for the holidays,” said Town of Winchester Selectman Candace Bouchard.

To add to the festivities along Main Street this holiday season, the Winchester Economic Development Commission recently announced the ribbon-cutting for a new shop, Plant Life Aficionado, at 60 Main Street on December 9 at 3:00 pm. Also, two new restaurants are slated to open on Main Street: Lee’s All American Family Diner is now open at 108 Main Street, and the Railway Cafe, formerly located in the center of Canaan, will open at its new location at 580 Main Street (formerly the Cafe de Olla) early in the new year.

  • Restaurants, personal services such as hair salons and barbershops, and libraries will be able to increase from 50 percent to 75 percent capacity indoors.

Phase 2 Allows Additional Businesses to Reopen Effective June 17

6/8/2020

As we enter the second phase of a four-phase approach to the reopening of Connecticut, we are keenly aware of how our downtown and Main Street have been greatly affected by COVID-19. We want to ensure that we support each other by wearing masks, washing our hands, and following social distancing guidelines to help everyone stay safe and allow organizations to get back to business.

Connecticut businesses are reopening in planned phases. But before a business can open your doors, they must self-certify that they are following strict safety guidelines to keep employees and customers safe.

Phase Two allows a wide range of additional businesses to reopen and expands the services for some of the sectors that successfully opened in Phase 1.
  • Amusement parks
  • Hotels
  • Indoor dining
  • Indoor museums, zoos, and aquariums
  • Indoor recreation (e.g. bowling, movie theaters, etc.)
  • Libraries
  • Outdoor events
  • Personal services (e.g. nail salons, tattoo parlors, etc.)
  • Sports and fitness facilities (e.g. gyms, fitness centers, pools, etc.)

The sector-specific rules include detailed information and requirements about physical distancing, facility capacity, hygiene, sanitizing, signage, personal protective equipment (PPE), scheduling, training, and more.  Beginning Monday, June 8, businesses and nonprofits planning to reopen during Phase 2 on June 17 will need to visit Connecticut’s self-certification website to certify that they are compliant with the reopening rules for their sector.

Let's support our businesses by following our health and safety guidelines and let them know that We're With You Winsted!

Designated Businesses Reopen with Phase One on May 20

5/20/2020

Support Local Businesses During the Pandemic and follow who is Reopening
May 20 marks the start of the first phase of the reopening plan. On this date offices, outside dining, retail, museums and zoos (outdoor) and outdoor recreation will take the first steps towards reopening. They will do so by following strict rules to keep customers and employees safe. And of course it is up to each business owner to decide whether this is the right time.

The general safety rules will remain in place: the use of face coverings, social distancing, no gatherings of more than 5 people and the strong advice to people over 65 or with underlying conditions to stay safe at home. Reopen Connecticut helped to develop the guidelines for the reopening phases. Timing of the next phase will be fully dependent on the success of this first one. We can only do this together – by following rules, guidelines and using our common sense. Connecticut is counting on you!

Our Food, Brew, Fun & Necessities list provides the up-to-date status of our businesses and what service levels they are offering.

How exciting to have two new creative and inventive  businesses open on Main Street in the last two months!

In October, Mama Pho, serving a Vietnamese cuisine at 242 Main Street, opened a new store just two doors down called Papa Boba, selling Bubble Tea and more!  Also, this month the Artist's Tree opened a new shop at 430 Main Street with a mission as a non-profit retail store.
Papa Boba, at 246 Main Street, is excited to introduce the Bubble Tea world to Winsted and attract today's youth with their fun atmosphere.  Bubble tea is a Taiwanese-based drink. Recipes contain tea of some kinds, flavors of milk, and sugar (optional) and toppings, known as "pearls"Ic e-blended versions are frozen and put into a blender, resulting in a slushy consistency. There are many varieties of the drink with a wide range of flavors. Papa Boba is ready for the winter too with a variety of tasty hot milk teas, teas and herbal teas without caffeine.
Papa Boba is  hoping to also attract students from all over Winsted and neighboring towns including The Gilbert

October 26th was sixty degrees and sunny -- the perfect forecast for children who have plans to create frightening paintings of ghosts and goblins on storefront windows - a tradition kicking off Halloween activities in Winchester.

More than 90 young students with paint brushes in hand took to Winsted’s storefronts for the 30th annual Halloween Window Painting Contest. The contest is open to all Winchester students from Kindergarten to sixth grade, including those who are attending schools out of town or home-schooled.

"I was so delighted to see the beautiful artwork and was pleasantly reminded of the wonderful memories of doing the window painting for years with my kids!" -- Theresa Cannvao
The young artists painted 50 storefront windows - from Mad River Music all the way down to the F&G Richards/Still River Studio!
